Spring (March – May): Baby Season
This is when we see the most aggressive break-ins. A mother raccoon will tear through a soffit, vent, or weak roofline to get inside, and once she has babies up there, she isn’t leaving without a fight. Birds also start nesting in gable vents and exhaust fans this time of year, and snakes begin emerging from their winter hiding spots.
If you hear scurrying or thumping overhead in spring, don’t wait. A single animal can quickly become a whole litter, and removing a mother with babies takes special care to do humanely.
Summer (June – August): Beating the Heat
Georgia summers are brutal, and animals feel it too. Your attic and crawl space stay shaded and sheltered, which makes them attractive escape spots from the heat.
Summer is also bat season. Bats form maternity colonies in attics and behind gable vents, and because their pups can’t fly for several weeks, this is a sensitive time when sealing them out the wrong way can trap and kill them. Fall (September – November): The Big Push Indoors
If spring is baby season, fall is moving season. As temperatures start to drop, rodents like roof rats and mice, along with squirrels, begin searching for a warm place to spend the winter and a safe spot to store food. They scout your home for any gap, crack, or loose vent they can squeeze through, and they only need a small opening to get in.
Fall is your best opportunity to get ahead of the problem. Sealing up entry points before the cold sets in is far easier than evicting a full-blown infestation in January. This is the season to have your home inspected and animal-proofed.
Winter (December – February): Hunkered Down
By winter, the animals that made it inside during fall are settling in for the long haul, and they’re not eager to leave the warmth. Outdoor activity slows down, so people often assume the threat has passed, but the opposite is true indoors. Rats and mice breed year-round once they’re sheltered, and squirrels stay denned in attics, chewing on wiring and insulation the whole time.
The danger in winter is that the damage quietly compounds. Gnawed electrical wiring is a serious fire risk, and droppings left behind create health hazards for your family. If you’ve been hearing noises since fall and ignored them, winter is when those few visitors become a real problem.
